Boulder. Some argue it’s the real capital of the City. And I can see why; it’s got that old worldly charm. The streets are lined with blooming purple jacarandas and a real sense of history from the heritage fronted facades.
Beginning at the top end of Burt Street, there are treasures to be found. Here’s our top 5 recommendations for a day well spent in beautiful Boulder.
1. The Eastern Goldfields Historical Society, Loopline Park Burt Street
Located inside the old Boulder Power Station, this grand old building is home to some of the oldest artifacts and photographs of the goldrush era. If you have any family history in the Goldfields, from soldiers to miners, explore the image library and take some history home with you.
2. Lizzie’s Soap Opera, Burt Street
What a treat this little boutique is! Bath bombs of all the most delicious flavours (we found a red skin lolly version and a pink champagne one). This store has delightful décor for your bathroom, funny signs and giftware galore.
3. The Book Boutique, Burt Street
There is nothing like a bookstore and this teeny tiny boutique is no exception. Crammed full of the most delightful books from vintage leatherbound classics, beautiful journals, self-help, childrens’ books to the latest novels. You may even come away with a unique 3D puzzle or gift for someone special.
4. The Goldfields War Museum, Boulder Town Hall Burt St
Kalgoorlie-Boulder has a rich military history, with many generations of Australians tracing their roots to the men and women who began as miners and became soldiers and nurses. Discover your ancestry or simply hear the tales of those brave souls who ventured before us.
5. The Recreation Hotel, Burt Street
Colloquially known as Sheffields by the locals, this imposing federation era pub is the perfect place to rest your weary legs after all that walking! Sit in the beer garden or check out the newly refurbished front bar. A big tip: try the wood fired pizzas, the Peanut Roaster is a firm favourite.
BONUS: Boulder Market Days
If you’re lucky enough to be in town during a “market week” you’ll have plenty of goodies to show for your efforts. Laden with local jams and honey, view the crafters, makers and shakers, enjoy a wander through the Loopline Park and into the street. From hot doughnuts to treats for your pets, it’s a great way to spend your Sunday morning
These are just a few of the hidden treasures you'll find on your travels. Take the time to wander Burt Street and find your own favourite spots.
